Company History

DataSpace Industries (DSI) was founded on Kauai in 1992 as a home-based technology consulting business. The company name was inspired by the novel Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, which envisioned a future where people would work, communicate, and build communities within digital spaces. That vision of "dataspace" continues to influence our work today.

In the early 1990s, before widespread Internet access was available on Kauai, DSI focused primarily on Macintosh consulting, software troubleshooting, operating system upgrades, and database development. At the time, a box of 3.5-inch floppy disks was an essential business tool. DSI also provided support for musicians and recording artists, designing and maintaining home recording studio systems throughout the island.

As personal computers became more common in local businesses, DSI developed custom databases using FileMaker Pro, helping organizations transition from paper-based systems to computerized information management. Database design and business automation quickly became a major area of specialization.

When Internet service first became available on Kauai in the mid-1990s, DSI worked with Hawaii Online, one of the island's earliest Internet service providers, helping businesses and community leaders establish their first email accounts and online communications systems. During this period, Roger Jacobs of DSI worked alongside community organizations, including the Kauai Economic Development Board and the Kauai Film Commission, to advocate for improved Internet infrastructure on the island. These efforts contributed to the arrival of Kauai's first DSL services, which became available in Princeville in the late 1990s.

In 1997, DSI partnered with Kauai County Council member Jimmy Tokioka and other community leaders to organize the Kauai NetExpo at the Kauai Beach Resort. By bringing a dedicated T1 Internet connection into the resort's ballroom, the event demonstrated the emerging power of the Internet to local businesses and residents. The Kauai Beach Resort became one of the first locations in Hawaii to offer high-speed Internet access for conferences and guests. The success of NetExpo led to additional events in 1999 and 2000 and helped encourage the growth of Kauai's online business presence.

DSI also supported government agencies, telecommunications providers, and private businesses through the Y2K transition. While relatively few issues ultimately emerged, careful preparation and oversight helped organizations approach the millennium change with confidence.

As Internet technologies matured, DSI expanded beyond desktop databases and adopted the LAMP platform (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP) as its primary development environment. This transition enabled web-based applications, remote collaboration, real-time data sharing, and scalable business systems that could be accessed from anywhere.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, DSI grew into a multidisciplinary technology consultancy, providing web development, database systems, network support, custom software development, Internet infrastructure consulting, and business automation services to organizations across Kauai.

Today, DataSpace Industries focuses primarily on custom web applications, database design, business process automation, cloud-based services, and specialized consulting projects. While many routine IT support functions are now handled by other service providers, DSI continues to build and maintain systems that help organizations collect, manage, and utilize information more effectively.

More than three decades after its founding, DSI remains committed to practical technology solutions, long-term client relationships, and helping Kauai businesses adapt to an ever-changing digital landscape.
